Transforming the Lives of an At-Risk Child...
One Dog at a Time

Donate Today

At Kids and Canines we transform lives…. All through the love of a dog.

The youth we serve at Kids and Canines have often experienced loss and hardships that would be difficult for many children and adults to comprehend, and as such, they suffer from social and emotional challenges.

Staff and volunteers work with the kids in roles as teacher, mentor and friend. Together we give a child a chance to prove they can overcome hardships and obstacles to accomplish great things.  Your donation gives a child that chance for a better life.

The magic of our program is simple.

We take one rescued dog and one disadvantaged child and bring them together with a purpose.   We teach at-risk youth how to train dogs and through this process the teen gains important life skills such as responsibility, teamwork, confidence and job skills that will help them later in life.

And many benefit.

While the dog is being trained they are heroes to their student trainers, giving them what they need – the best therapy ever – the unconditional love of a dog. The dogs also provide therapy to many more during their training as reading buddies and visitors to local schools, senior homes and area organizations.

Success is measured by the impact a dog makes on the lives it touches, from the youth who train to those we visit during training to the client who receives the dog.

Annually, around 350 children will benefit from the companionship of one of our dogs.

Children find acceptance, they grown in confidence and self-esteem

While learning important life and work skills that will serve them upon leaving our program the youth in our programs also find acceptance, build confidences and self-esteem.  Through the process of training a dog they learn empathy, dedication, social skills and the satisfaction of success that comes from hard work. These traits make their futures brighter.

Classes

We offer three different 6-week dog training classes to the public: Puppy Kindergarten, Basic Manners and AKC’s Canine Good Citizen class.

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN (CGC)

This class is a 6 week class designed to have a very well-trained dog that is a pleasure to be around out in public. We build on all the basic cues and work toward passing the Canine Good Citizen test.

BASIC MANNERS

This class is a 6 week course for dogs older than 6 months. We will build on the basic cues such as longer stays, coming from farther away and how to work away from needing a treat in your hand.

PUPPY KINDERGARTEN

This is a 6 week course for pups under 6 months of age.  Class must be finished by the time your pup turns 6 months. This class focuses on fun learning and socialization for you and your puppy.  We introduce very basic skills such as sit, down, loose leash walking, stay and come.
